The imam spoke of a hadith of the Prophet SAWS in which he was\nreported to have said:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“Verily, there is a Fitnah\n(trial) for every nation and the trial for my nation (or Ummah) is\nwealth.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Dear brothers and sisters, in this hadith we are given the\ntopic of this weeks reminder and a warning on what is possibly one of the most\ndestructive of tests that this life offers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
There can be no doubt that the test of wealth, of money and\nof worldly goods is ingrained in every day life for us all. From the means by\nwhich wealth is acquired, to the things that we spend our money on, there is a\ntest in this life for us that we must be mindful of. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
In regards to wealth itself, we see the grotesque amounts of\nwealth that individuals possess in todays age. Individuals that possess the\nlevel of wealth that one cannot even imagine that can be spent in a lifetime\nand yet they strive to earn more, to acquire more as the hunger for wealth is\nnever satisfied. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The imam reminded us of a hadith in relation to this point.\nIt is translated to say:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“If the son of Adam (the\nhuman being) had two valleys of money, he would wish for a third, for nothing\ncan fill the belly of Adam’s son except dust, and Allah forgives him who\nrepents to Him.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Dear brothers and sisters, in this reminder we are told of\nthe these people as the hunger for wealth is never satisfied and instead it is\nour own efforts that must control the love and want for money.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Alongside this reminder, we are warned by Allah SWT in the\nQuran of the test of money. The imam reminded us of the first 9 ayats of Sura Al-Humaza\nwhich is translated to say:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Woe to every backbiter, slanderer,<\/p>\n\n\n\n
who amasses wealth \u02f9greedily\u02fa and counts it \u02f9repeatedly\u02fa,<\/p>\n\n\n\n
thinking that their wealth will make them immortal!<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Not at all! Such a person will certainly be tossed into the Crusher.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
And what will make you realize what the Crusher is?<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u02f9It is\u02fa Allah\u2019s kindled Fire,<\/p>\n\n\n\n
which rages over the hearts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It will be sealed over them,<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u02f9tightly secured\u02fa with long braces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Dear brothers and\nsisters, the test of wealth is one which needs careful guidance and thought as\nwe live in a very materialistic society where the pursuit of money has no equal\nand society is geared towards capitalism and the acquisition of wealth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It is worth noting\nthat there is nothing wrong with having wealth but there is a distinct\ninstruction by Allah SWT on how we should think of wealth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The two areas of\nconsideration in regards to this topic is what today\u2019s reminder will conclude\nwith.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Firstly, it is how\nwe acquire wealth. We need to be mindful that we will all be tested in\ndifferent ways in regards to this point. Some of us may spend most of our lives\nstruggling to acquire money, whether its because of the level of expenditure we\nhave which means we are counting our pennies to those of us who struggle to get\na good job, the temptations at this point are severe where there are so many\nways to acquire wealth that isn\u2019t halal. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
From interest-based\nloans to methods of income which are impermissible, the means to acquire\nwealth, especially in the western society has no equal in times gone by and so\nwe must remain resolute and instead use the power of dua and return to Allah\nSWT to ask Him for changes in our circumstances. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
This is no easy\ntask for some as the struggle of money is a painful one, especially when we are\nresponsible for others but Allah SWT knows our struggle and with that comes\ngreat reward from Him insh\u2019Allah. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The second area of\nconsideration is then on how we spend the wealth that we acquire. Dear brothers\nand sisters, we need to remind ourselves that every penny we spend will be\naccounted for on the Day of Judgement and therefore we cannot be frivolous with\nmoney, even if we are blessed to have it in abundance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The imam reminded\nus of a hadith in relation to this point which is translated to say:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“The son of Adam says:’My\nwealth, my wealth, but is<\/strong> there something for you from your wealth\nbesides what you give in charity that remains, or you eat which perishes, or\nwhat you wear that grows worn?”<\/p>\n\n\n\n Dear brothers and sisters, our beloved teacher SAWS is\nreminding us here that the acquisition of wealth is a temporary thing that is\nlimited to this life.
